Cheers matey, defo good timing i agree, might be able to turn the back garden into a bit more of a back garden now! Maybe... There are lots of people with chickens down there too...a possibility for the future maybe?

I don't have a towbar sadly and since we are selling both cars, won't be fitting one, thatnsk for the offer though, might have to hire your services if return for a few beers sometime!

Thats excellent news! Good timing too, got plenty of work to do but at least you can plan in advance of the main growing season. Does your car have a towbar? If so I now have a small trailer you can borrow anytime to save it getting mullered.

[...] The saga continues! Anyone out there following the blog may have read recently about our struggles to find an allotment. First we started helping out a friend, then took on a very, very boggy plot…more of a swimming pool actually! That lasted a day. I posted about not having the allotment and the reasons for turning it down here. [...]

Congratulations on your decision. Having dealt with a lot of land like that in the past, it is sometimes just best to leave it to what it is and walk away. We even found a local group that was trying to "reclaim a soggy piece of land" that turned out to be a vital bog feeding into a local creek. What a disaster that would have been!

Yup... you'll be better off in the long run... good decision! Looking forward to updates on your new plan for next year.

I think Lucy is right, you might as well give it a go. Maybe have a look into good ol' fashioned drainage channels to move the water off the plot. Other than that maybe consider growing Water Cress?

Rocks... lots of them. Pile on the rocks and sandy soil to build up support in the bed then put on your top soil. Construction sites are a great place to get the rocks from and just use them to build up as much of a base as possible to build your topsoil on. Think of it like a giant planter pot! LOL

Well look at it this way - you could have a bash at it for a year. Being 100th on the list you probably wouldn't get a plot within this time anyway. Within a year if you haven't made any progress, then at just go on the list. Nothing to lose by taking it on if you look at it like that....try posting to a few more freecycle groups, you just never know.

Wow congratulations, that is a very fine allotment. And despite the weeds problem it actually doesn't look too bad, anything that has vegetables in it is doing well by my standards. Enjoy it.

I like the hot chilli idea, knowing me though, i'd probably get it in my eyes!

Rachael - it worked a treat once it was up and adapted with garden canes, but in my 'thinking it was getting colder' stupidity i took it down. Little did i know!

I often think, if I was any good at DIY, it would be good to build a walk-in cage, along the lines of a fruit cage, for brassicas, covered in butterfly-proof netting, but one that could be easily taken down and reconstructed elsewhere to allow for crop rotation. Personally I'm a bit frightened of DIY though.

Hello,

Sorry to bother you but I am trying to spread the message about the nationwide problems with contaminated manure. I hope you have heard about it - if not try this link to our website http://www.glallotments.btik.com/p_Contaminated_Manure.ikml

You may have already done this but I am afraid I haven't had time to browse your website fully, but if not would you consider placing a warning on your website as this problem hasn't gone away - contaminated manure could be in the system for a year or two yet even if the herbicide that has been temporarily withdrawn is never used again.

Now is the time that many gardeners will be obtaining manure and anything we can do to prevent others from experiencing the problems faced this year is worth a try.

Hi, just chanced across your blog while looking up veg varieties. Looks like your archive will have some handy tips for me; I'm starting a kitchen garden from scratch in Reading in November, like yours in a back garden. Assuming that the conditions in Reading and Cheltenham are fairly similar, I reckon timings will be similar too - your comments on sprouting broccoli have already given me something to think about.
I'll have a good root about in the archives! Good luck with the allotment & the photography.
cheers,
Helen

Thanks all, i am missing it a little. I've got half term coming up so might have to do a few posts about all the veg we've STILL got producing...particularly the incredibly tasty purple sprouting and the Japanese Onions that have just gone in!

Cheers everyone. We did the pictures and the post as we couldn't find anything decent on the web to help us. So we made one.

Would love to see your own attempts this year, or even next. Take some picks and post the link in comments!

Happy stringing!
