I really didn’t like any sort of cabbage up until recently when we visited a friends house and were served a delicious roast with a healthy serving of savoy cabbage. I am now converted, and made a point of grabbing some seeds at the start of the season and planting them!
There were two plants in the bed until i picked this one (beautifully modelled by the Mrs!), sitting quite happily under the brussel sprouts and broccoli plants. I thought they’d probably died until i went on a caterpillar hunt and saw this one ready to pick. The other has been pretty much nibbled to death by beasties, but the head may survive if i leave it to grow a little longer.
We steamed it over our beans, and it was very, very tasty…there’s something about the crinkliness of it…or am i just rambling!? One plant was enough for 6 serving, which is plenty of cabbage for one week.

Hmmm, I’m just remembering the Savoy that I harvested in about Feb time. So irony and full of favour. Not sure what you’re doing with one at this time of the year, but would seem the perfect vegetable for the miserable weather we’re having. Here’s to global warming…

In my family, (eastern European) this is the only kind of cabbage used for cabbage recipes. I’m not sure why it is preferred, maybe because it is more tender and sweet. I have read some fascinating things about the cabbage festival in Italy. People from all over Italy travel to the North to Asti the for yearly treat of cabbage soup made from the savoy cabbages. I can never grow brassicas because of the all the pests, but I’m still trying. I saw a huge grasshopper sitting right next to where my cabbage seedlings used to be. He ate them clean of. Here’s to cabbage!

I planted it about Spring time, and we are harvesting them quite young as can be seen from the picture.
Lzyjo - i know what you mean about the pests, that’s why i use an enviromesh cover until about this time, so the caterpillars don’t get to eat everything!
