This used to be a sea of decking when we arrived…what we have now is four 1.2m by 2.4m beds on a four bed rotation (our first time doing this, so you’ll all be laughing when diseases take over!!:). I’m sure it’ll develop slowly…plans are afoot….

Next, hopefully, everything will start appearing above the soil! I’ll put a plan of what is planted on the ‘Planting Scheme’ part of the site as soon as i have time! Should have ‘edible!; radishes soon, and spinach won’t be long too.
How’s yours coming along?
I’ll post a pic of the beans next week

Let me first say I enjoy your musings and what a good job you are doing. I am a Johnny come lately to veg growing. I have a small plot in the corner of my back garden 14′ X 15′ alloted to me to grow veg. I have decided to grow in containers and place them as much vertically as I can to maximise the space available. I have taken up 6′X4′ with a freecycle greenhouse placed in the shaddy part againt the shed so I have to think upwards. I am building a step shelf system to store the wine bottle boxes I have adapted to use as containers. This will take up the 6′X15′ space that gets the sun most of the day. I have a few plants from fellow freecyclers this year and hope to sow my own seeds in the years to come. I am writing today to ask if you give much credance to the link on your site that talks about the growing of tomato plants. I glean from it that he believes in growing fruit not leaves. In fact he recommends leaving only 3 to 4 leaves per plant. He rambles on about his Polish Grandfather’s secret and offers an ebook to explain in details how to grow 12′ tall plants. Have you looked into this? What is your opinion? Thanks

Hi Ron, welcome, and thanks first of all. 14 by 15 isnt bad eh! When i first started i had a metre square and a couple of pots. But once the bug bites! The upwards way of growing is a good idea, particularly you can buy trailing varieties and climbing of courgette and tomato.
As regards the link, if you could post here specifically i can remind myself. I think its important not to grow too much foliage, and removing sideshoot leaves is a good idea. I havent started this yet, maybe at the weekend. It makes sense really, but im not sure you want to remove too much as the plant will take too much of a hit and die. Im going to do a post on this soon i think, might be useful to others too, after ive done a bit more research.
