Where have you ‘bean’ hiding?

Posted by vegmonkey on August 1, 2009

I spent a good few hours down the allotment towards the end of last week, hoeing, weeding and planting some spinach for when it gets a bit colder, where I have just taken the next row of potatoes out.

The Runner and French beans we planted have done quite well. Some of the plants have failed to climb the poles I so generously erected for them and are floundering around on the ground. Most have decided to head for the skies. I had to check back to the seed tray to see what we plnated as labels really are not our forte!

The old favourites that are seen throughout allotments of the land (well, the 3 i’ve been to lately anyhow…) – the familiar red and white flowers – are ‘Painted Lady,’ below:

Next to them we have what I think are ‘Scarlet,’ but I really don’t remember planting that variety so they could be anything. Any ideas?

We’ve also got some really nice French Beans flowering – they are yellow and white – and yes, you’ve guessed it, I have no idea what variety these are either – not a clue!

Anyway, after going down to the plot again last weekend, and hoeing the beans, I spotted the odd bean. Upon further investigation, I found there were loads! Dinner has just consisted of a large amount of the beans picked, steamed. The french beans were just topped and tailed, while the runners had the sides trimmed off too. Quite surprising what you find when you take a close look!

I just need to make sure I don’t take a closer look at the courgette plants anytime soon…(see next post!)
